European phone systems are undergoing a prolonged change. Countries like France, Spain, Italy, Copenhagen, Portugal and Monaco are no longer using separate city codes like what it used to be. All the phone numbers have the code included now. As such, you must always dial the initial 0 or 9 which was previously required to be added before a city code only when dialing from another city within the country, and this is something which is still in practice in most of the other European countries. Also, take note of two recent changes for London and Lisbon. Previous London city codes of 171 and 181 have been replaced with a new single code which is 20, and then followed by an eight-digit number beginning with either 7 or 8. As for Lisbon, the city code has changed from 1 to 21.

It is advisable that you use a calling card if you need the easiest and cheapest way to call home from Europe. On the road, all you need is just to dial a local access code which is normally free and then key in the calling card number and the number you're intending to call. If you are in a non-touch tone country, just wait for an English speaking operator to assist you in getting your call through. Usually the calling card will come with a small wallet-size directory of the local access numbers to use. Besides, you can also contact these calling card companies to make a collect call as well.

When it comes to the cost of direct dialing, it is much cheaper to call from the United States to Europe instead of the other way. So whenever possible, have your family members and friends call you at your hotel rather than you calling them. The international access code to dial directly back to United States and Canada is usually 00, though it is not always. And the country code for United States is 1, follows by the area code and number. If calling directly to Australia, the access code is also 00 and the country code is 61. For New Zealand, the country code is 64.
