Flag of Argentina

The second-largest country in South America, the Argentine Republic occupies most of the southern portion of the continent. Originally inhabited by Native American peoples, Argentina was once part of the Inca civilization. It was first visited by Europeans during the early 16th century, the capital city, Buenos Aires, being founded in 1536. Having been made a Spanish viceroyalty in 1776, in 1810 the Argentinean populace revolted against Spanish rule. Full independence was achieved in 1816, although the war of liberation continued until 1820.

The blue and white colors of the national flag are those adopted by the revolutionary leader General Manuel Belgrano (1770-1820), who is said to have been inspired by looking at the sky. These colors were used to distinguish the Liberation Army from Spanish troops (who wore red insignia). On 25 May, 1810, crowds of people wearing blue-and-white cockades massed in Buenos Aires to demand independence and it is said that on this day the white clouds parted to reveal a blue sky and shining sun, heralding a bright future for a new nation. The golden 'Sun of May' charge, with 32 alternating straight and flaming rays, was added to the blue-and-white flag in 1818.
